A_Authenticity (Part of the Be Happy Series)

Please identify yourself

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!

Oh, how I would love to be able to nod emphatically and say, “Dr. Seuss sure hit the nail right on the head with this one, don’t you think?” But what do those words even really mean

All too often, we hear the old cliché, “be yourself”, or “be true to yourself”, or any variation of that. But what does “being yourself” really mean? Just who / what is that “self” that we are supposed to be?

So far, on our journey to B.E _ H.A.P.P.Y, we have learned to:

B – Be Brave – revisit your Bucket List

E – Express your Expectations

H – Help others and allow yourself to be Helped

And today, we are going to learn the next step, so sit up straight and keep reading.

Living in India has taught me a great deal of things in a very short time. One of them, being a Sanskrit Mantra that goes:

Sat, Chit, Ananda. In short, it means, Existence, Consciousness, Bliss.

One day at the office, while we were contemplating this mantra (India is awesome – we do meditations and yoga in the office!) the CEO shared some of his wisdom with us. None of us knew that he actually has a vast knowledge of Sanskrit, which, according to some sources, is the language upon which principles computer code is built. On the Internet, you will only see “Sat, Chit, Ananda” translated as “Existence, Consciousness, Bliss”, but our in-house Wiseman elaborated quite eloquently on this and a whole bunch of things clicked into place for me.

He explained, that all of us have our own thoughts, dreams and desires. We all have different things that we care about and are passionate about, and the same things that fascinate one person, might bore another to tears…. And that’s perfectly OK! Now that was what struck me, and maybe a light bulb goes on for you too.

In society, our homes, school, life in general, how often are we lead and conditioned to believe that certain goals or dreams are more acceptable to have than others? Children are often encouraged to become doctors, engineers, lawyers and such, but rarely to become woodworkers, nature conservationists or plumbers, for example.

I was such a child – shall we say, “persuaded”, to study something I had no interest in. Maybe you were too.

And maybe, like me, you are still searching for your true passion, because you were discouraged from finding your own interests and passions when you were younger. Maybe, like me, you were trying so hard, for so long, to want what other people thought you should want, that you now wonder every day if you are ever going to find that thing that makes you want to get out of bed every day.

And, what if you do find it, and then it’s so far outside of your field of experience or expertise, that it seems impossible to change direction and go after that passion? Especially if you are at an age now where you have a family, a career… Damn, that’s some scary stuff right there.

Oops, I got side-tracked.

Sat, Chit, Ananda. Existence. Consciousness. Bliss. How does this translate into

B.E(ing) _ H.A.P.P.Y?

A – Authenticity

You exist in this realm right now as a human being. Take a moment to become consciously aware of how you feel (not what you think) in all situations. Are you happy doing (whatever)? Do you enjoy doing (whatever)? And I don’t mean just your job. I’m talking about every activity you engage in, in every waking moment of your life. Walking your dog, going on that trip, attending that get-together. Are you spending each waking moment, doing something that makes you feel amazing? Or are you simply following instructions, living out someone else’s expectations, hoping that maybe one day you’ll start linking it?

It’s OK to want what YOU want. It’s OK to enjoy / like what YOU like. It’s OK to say NO to other people’s dreams and expectations and even to their passions – because that’s exactly what those are: OTHER PEOPLE’s dreams, passions and expectations. No one else is crafting their life around what you want them to want, so it’s time to give yourself permission to want what you want, too.

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!

And the only way to find out who that “you” is, is to allow yourself to feel it.

Sat, Chit, AnandaExist fully in the present. Be consciously aware of your emotions, every moment of every day.

Authentically. Unabashedly. Shamelessly.

That is the path to Bliss.
